I heard about this album in the hoobastank orkut community. After listening to reason and everyman for himself, there's no question that Hoobastank is a fairly good band, some would even say great band. There's also no question that the one thing that put these boys on the map was their 2004 hit "The Reason". Since it's release, they have put out one studio recording Every Man for Himself which contained three singles that barely even registered on the rock charts. Can they find what they need to get back on top with this CD, their fifth studio album with Island Records? Let's get to it and find out
We kick out the CD with a song called "My Turn". This song gets us on a good start as we get a good driving beat with some decent harmonies. It's a little poppy for my taste when they're technically considered an "alternative rock/post-grunge rock" band, but it's fairly good. Besides, what else can you expect from the song that's getting the most radio airplay from the album? The primary thing I kept thinking about when I heard this song was that it's a perfect Nickelback song. The primary problem is that it's not Nickelback singing it; and before you jump on me in the comments, listen to that song again and pretend Chad Kroeger is singing it... tell me I'm not right. That's what I thought...
"All About You" is a little more what I was expecting on this CD. It's a bit more intense than the other few songs thus far. The sad thing is that even though this is one of the better songs, it's also the shortest song on the album clocking in at a weak 2:55. After this, we are given "The Letter" which was also pretty good. For Hoobastank, it's another "The" song. "The Reason" hit charts and raced its way to the top. I can see "The Letter" hitting the charts and moving rather quickly. Whether or not it's good enough to make it to the top, I'm not sure, but I can say that I definitely liked this particular track. This is one of those songs that's a little slower, but has a good level of intensity and good harmonies.
"Tears of Yesterday" utilizes a little bit of a different sound than we're used to with Hoobastank. There's a very "unplugged" sound to this track. This is skip track three.
From here out, you can expect this album to pick up. If it wasn't for the rest of these songs, I would've given up on the album and rated it below a 4. As it is, the next few tracks will save this album and give it a respectable rating. I'm gonna take them track by track so we can talk about it.
"Sick of Hanging On" is a great alternative track. For the first time on this CD I'm actually hearing what I expected this whole CD to sound like. "Sick of Hanging On" is a GREAT song with a driving beat, great harmonies, decent lyrics and just all-around great energy. Try to say it isn't, and I'll call you a liar, how 'bout that?
"You're the One" brings us another slower track, but it's driven a little bit harder than the other ballad tracks. This is a slow song that I can get behind because of what they have to offer us. Doug Robb gives us a chance to really hear his voice as it's a bit more exposed in this song than it is in others. You can tell that there's plenty of meaning behind this song and I would assume it's about his wife, Christiana Lund.
"Who the Hell Am I?" is another harder track on the album. It appears that once we got to track seven, the band got warmed up and starting finally putting some good shit on the album. It makes you wonder if maybe they had just waited a little bit longer, they might've been able to beef up the rest of the album to match these last few tracks.
"You Need to Be Here" is another slower song that gives us a lot of exposure to Doug Robb's vocals and keeps the intensity moving so you don't just drop off after the last song. Nothing really stand-out about this song, but it's good.
"Gone Gone Gone" is a GREAT groove track. There's quite a lot of good rhythm guitar work, amazing harmonies, and Chris Hesse brings us a driving beat on the drums that really closes up this album.

Dumb emo rocker wannabes. Lets see how many people remember them after 10-15 years. Personally, I think they won't be missed. At least I won't.
